Investing in Local Talent: How Survey Solutions is Growing with Suffolk

Published on by JST

Sizewell Apprenticeships

As Sizewell C drives growth across Suffolk, Survey Solutions is investing in local talent to support the project’s future. We’re backing Suffolk New College’s new Geospatial Survey Technician apprenticeship and building Sizewell-ready surveying teams. Our focus: local jobs, local partnerships, and helping contractors deliver social value on complex projects.

The momentum building around the Sizewell C project is more than just a boost for the UK’s energy future – it’s transforming the regional economy and creating opportunities across Suffolk. At Survey Solutions, we’re proud to be playing our part in this story.

As a business with deep roots in the area – our Ipswich and Norwich bases are home to two of our largest operational teams – we’re continuing to invest locally. Not just because Sizewell C is opening doors, but because we believe in the long-term future of Suffolk’s skilled workforce.

Supporting Sizewell Contractors, Building Careers

We know from conversations with contractors that finding skilled, site-cleared people for Sizewell projects is a real challenge. It’s not just about security clearance – it’s also the technical inductions, health and safety protocols, and site-specific requirements that can delay getting people on the ground. That’s why we’ve focused on ensuring our team is ready to mobilise quickly – with many of our surveyors already fully cleared and familiar with the working procedures at Sizewell.

From setting out to topographical surveys, underground utility mapping to structural monitoring and drone imagery, our team is well-versed in the critical surveying services contractors need to keep complex projects like Sizewell moving safely and efficiently. And because we’re local, we can respond quickly – whether that’s a mobilisation at short notice or ongoing support over the life of a package.

Partnering on Sizewell for the Long Term

We also know the demand for local, skilled people is only going to increase – and as a responsible employer, we welcome that growth. But rather than competing for the same talent, we believe the best results come from partnership. That’s why we’re actively looking to work closely with contractors on Sizewell, building long-term relationships that create shared value.

By collaborating early, we can help contractors deliver social value targets, bring pre-cleared, well-trained resource to their projects, and jointly invest in developing the next generation of surveying talent. This partnership-led approach also supports the stability of our team – making sure our people have development pathways and exposure to some of the most exciting projects in the region without needing to move on to progress.

Investing in the Next Generation of Engineers in Suffolk

We’re particularly proud to be supporting Suffolk New College as they launch their first-ever Geospatial Survey Technician Level 3 apprenticeship this year. It’s a significant step forward for the region, and a rare opportunity – only two other colleges in the UK currently offer this specialist apprenticeship.

This new programme was specifically introduced at Suffolk New College to help meet the growing demand for skilled surveyors in the region. Crucially, the success of the apprenticeship cohort depends on securing enough local employers to get behind it. We’re proud to be one of those early supporters, taking on three new apprentices this year – two in our Ipswich team and one in Brentwood.

Lauren Bailey, our HR Manager, recently visited Suffolk New College to see the new facilities first-hand.

The quality of the learning environment is excellent, and we’re really confident this course will help build the next generation of surveyors here in Suffolk. It’s exciting to be part of something that’s opening doors for young people locally.

Our apprentices will be gaining hands-on experience on real projects alongside expert technical training, backed by our hybrid training programme, which has been shortlisted for a national award – a fantastic endorsement of the quality of development we offer.

Apprenticeships aren’t just a nice-to-have for us – they’re a critical part of how we build our future teams and deliver social value in the communities where we work.

Why It Matters

For contractors working on Sizewell, social value isn’t just a contractual tick-box – it’s a key part of securing and delivering work on site. Partnering with a local, trusted supplier like Survey Solutions helps contractors meet those commitments – supporting local jobs, developing local skills, and investing in Suffolk’s future.

If you’re looking for a survey partner who understands the Sizewell landscape – and the importance of social value on this project – we’d love to hear from you.
