Rebar Survey for Cable Installation on a Major UK Bridge Crossing

Survey Solutions carried out a specialist rebar survey on a major motorway bridge crossing a river to support the safe installation of replacement lighting cables. The project ensured drilling works could proceed without compromising the structural integrity of the bridge.
The Brief
Survey Solutions was appointed by Crown Highways Ltd to attend site and locate reinforcement (rebar) within the bridge columns. The survey was required to enable the installation of new lighting cables, with precise marking needed to ensure that drilling for cable fixings avoided critical structural elements.
The Solution
A targeted rebar detection survey was undertaken to accurately identify and mark reinforcement positions within the bridge columns. This enabled the client to safely install cable ties and associated fixings without impacting the structural performance of the asset.
Due to the challenging environment, a carefully planned access strategy was required. A mobile platform was deployed on the nearside carriageway, allowing the surveyor to be safely positioned over the side of the bridge to scan between the columns. Additional works were required at the base of one column located within the river, which necessitated access by boat to complete the survey.
All site logistics, including access arrangements and coordination, were managed by the client, allowing Survey Solutions to focus on efficient delivery of the survey works. The surveyor also underwent the necessary safety training and operated using appropriate fall protection equipment while working at height and over water.
The Outcome
The survey was successfully completed, providing accurate rebar location data and clear on-site markings to guide safe drilling operations. This enabled the lighting cable replacement works to proceed without risk to the bridge structure. The project was delivered efficiently despite the complex access requirements, with works progressing slightly ahead of programme.
