Improving Safety Across Cambridgeshire With Drone Bridge Inspections

For several years, Survey Solutions has supported M Group’s bridge inspections across Cambridgeshire by using drone technology to capture detailed imagery of bridge structures. This approach removes the need for engineers to conduct hazardous inspections from boats, creating a safer, more efficient process while delivering high-quality visual data for defect analysis.
The Project
Survey Solutions was appointed by M Group to inspect bridges at multiple locations across Cambridgeshire on behalf of Cambridgeshire County Council. The work involved capturing high-resolution aerial imagery and video to support ongoing condition assessments. These inspections are part of a long-term programme to monitor the safety and integrity of the county’s bridges, helping engineers identify defects before they become more serious.
Using drone technology, our survey team captured detailed footage of the undersides and elevations of each bridge, providing engineers with a comprehensive visual record without the need for traditional access methods.
The Challenge
M Group engineers previously inspected bridges by accessing structures from boats. Following an internal review of this process, the client looked for a safer, more innovative method that would reduce risk while still providing the detailed inspection data required.
The inspections also presented operational challenges, with boats navigating beneath bridges, swans occupying waterways, and dense vegetation restricting access in some locations. These factors required careful planning and experienced drone pilots to safely capture the necessary imagery without disrupting the surrounding environment.
Our Approach
Survey Solutions deployed its specialist drone survey team to capture high-definition video and imagery of each bridge, focusing on the underside of the structures and other areas that would traditionally require difficult or hazardous access.
Careful flight planning enabled the team to work safely around environmental constraints, including waterways, wildlife and vegetation, while ensuring complete visual coverage of each bridge. The resulting imagery provided engineers with clear, detailed footage that could be reviewed remotely to assess the condition of the structures and identify any defects requiring further investigation.
The Outcome
The drone inspections have transformed the way bridge assessments can be conducted, replacing higher-risk manual inspection methods with a safer and more efficient solution. Engineers can now review high-quality playback footage and imagery to analyse defects without needing to access the structures themselves.
