SURVEYING AN ‘EGG-SHAPED’ PIPE

Photo showing cross section of an Egg Shaped sewer pipeDuring a recent CCTV drainage survey in the Midlands our underground surveyors came across a good example of an ‘egg-shaped’ sewer pipe. This type of sewer construction is unusual, especially outside of London.

When new sewers were designed for London in the last half of the 1800s, egg-shaped (or oval) sewers were determined to be the best cross-section for the larger combined sewers. This design is sometimes called ‘English’ because of its association with the City but was also used in Paris and many early sewers in the United States.

Engineers found that the lower part of a V channel could carry sanitary waste flow along well while the upper portion could provide sufficient capacity to transport storm water from the streets. This discovery led to evolution of the egg shape pipe, which provided a smooth surface that proved most effective in transporting flows rapidly.
