Rail Bridge Survey on the Settle–Carlisle Line

Published on by Toni Abrahams

Survey Solutions was commissioned by a regular client specialising in bridge, rail, renewable energy, and infrastructure design to carry out a detailed rail bridge survey near Penrith, Cumbria, on the Settle–Carlisle line. This project formed part of an ongoing programme of bridge surveys delivered over the past year.

The scope of works included a deck-side topographic survey, 80 metres of track survey incorporating embankments, detailed bridge face elevations, and sectional surveys through all three arch spans and piers. The data was required to support engineering design of repair works to the structure.

The Challenge

The survey was carried out within a live rail environment under Network Rail, therefore strict adherence to safety protocols was crucial, alongside precise coordination with other contractors carrying out concurrent condition surveys.

Working during a night shift added further complexity, with limited time windows available to complete all survey activities efficiently. The remote location and operational constraints demanded careful planning and a high level of technical competence to ensure accurate data capture within the possession period.

Our Approach

The survey was carried out by an experienced surveyor, that obtained a Track Visitor Permit (TVP) to safely access the site. The TVP provides temporary permission for individuals who are not trained in Personal Track Safety (PTS) to access Network Rail land within 3 meters of the nearest rail for a specific purpose.

Working within the agreed possession window, the team coordinated closely with other contractors on site to ensure all activities were delivered efficiently and without conflict.

Using a combination of topographic surveying techniques, the team captured detailed data across the track, embankments, and bridge structure. The approach prioritised accuracy, efficiency, and safety, ensuring all required information was obtained within the limited timeframe.

The Outcome

The survey was successfully completed during the allocated night possession, delivering high-quality, accurate data to support the client’s engineering requirements. The clear understanding of the project scope ensured that all deliverables were right first time, removing the need for follow-up queries or additional site visits.

Survey Solutions’ responsiveness and ability to coordinate complex rail access logistics were highlighted by the client, reinforcing our position as a trusted partner for infrastructure surveys. This project further strengthens our ongoing relationship, with continued work being secured across similar rail and bridge survey schemes.

“Survey Solutions provided an excellent service. High quality drawings were provided quickly, giving us accurate information to allow Wilde to proceed with the design and specification of repairs to the arch bridge structure”
