Survey Solutions delivers high-precision substation surveys for Electricity Northwest, enabling safe, compliant infrastructure works across the North West.
Partnering with Electricity Northwest on Hartshead Substation Survey and Beyond
Survey Solutions continues to support Electricity Northwest with trusted survey expertise from our Manchester office—reinforcing our role as a reliable partner in the UK energy sector. As one of the nation’s 14 distribution network operators, Electricity Northwest manages over 13,000km of overhead power lines and 44,000km of underground cables, connecting communities from Manchester to the Lake District. Among our recent contributions was the Hartshead Substation survey, a key part of our commitment to deliver engineering certainty across vital infrastructure.
High-Precision Topographical and Elevation Data
We’re frequently commissioned to deliver topographical and measured building surveys across their operational footprint. To enable safe and compliant work on live infrastructure, several of our surveyors have completed the H100 substation electrical safety course. This qualification ensures our team members operate with full awareness of high-voltage hazards and the required safety protocols.
In summer 2023, we carried out comprehensive surveys at three substations, including Hartshead Substation—a large compound approximately 100m by 50m in size, comparable to a football pitch. Over a two-day programme, we deployed advanced 3D laser scanning to deliver full topographical capture of the site, detailing surface levels and the critical infrastructure used to convert electricity between voltage levels.
A crucial part of the project involved delivering precision elevation data for structural and mechanical components. This included fine detailing of steelwork, fixings, and even individual bolts, supporting Electricity Northwest’s maintenance and asset lifecycle planning.
Our investment in technology and meticulous site execution enabled us to provide high-definition 2D outputs and a detailed visual record of the compound. These deliverables support safe, confident, and cost-effective decision-making across key infrastructure assets.
