Survey Solutions recently carried out 3D scanning for substations in South Wales, continuing our successful partnership with dB Attenuation Ltd. As a leading provider of acoustic enclosures in the energy sector, dB Attenuation relies on accurate site data to design and install high-performance solutions around transformers and shunt reactors on National Grid sites across the UK.

Supporting Acoustic Enclosure Design with Accurate Site Data

For this specific project, our team was tasked with scanning a 400kV shunt reactor located at a National Grid substation in South Wales. The area, known as the bund, contains naturally sloped screed designed to direct liquids towards a sump. Accurately measuring these gradients manually would have been both time-consuming and susceptible to error.

To overcome this challenge, our expert surveyors deployed the Leica RTC360 3D Laser Scanner. By capturing multiple vantage points, we created a comprehensive and highly accurate 3D map of the transformer, its cooling systems, the bund, and precise GPS coordinates.

This data was used to develop a high Level of Detail (LOD5) Revit model and point cloud. These outputs were then passed to dB Attenuation’s design team, who integrated them into their SolidWorks environment to model the acoustic enclosure with exact precision.

The entire 3D scanning process at the substation was completed in just three hours—minimising site disruption while maximising design efficiency. This rapid turnaround provided dB Attenuation with reliable data to progress swiftly into the design and fabrication phases.
