St John’s Street Monitoring

Automated structural monitoring by Survey Solutions supports Cambridge aparthotel build, protecting nearby listed buildings with 24/7 data and alert systems.
Our team set up automated structural monitoring at the former St John’s Street carpark site where a new 229 room ‘aparthotel’ is being built.
New Cambridge St John’s Street Mixed-Use Development
Working in partnership with principal contractor Gilbert Ash, Survey Solutions is providing one of our monitoring solutions to identify any potential structural impacts of from the construction process on a closely located Grade II listed building.
The car park was closed in 2022 ready for demolition and the start of the new development’s build programme, with a secant wall system to be installed followed by the excavation process.
Automated Monitoring as an Effective Solution
As part of the monitoring specification and by working closely with the various project teams it was agreed that sixty patch scan locations, and fifty plus prisms would be installed on the neighbouring properties, some of which are listed. Two MS60 Multi-stations were installed on site in cages to prevent damage and theft which would impact the level and quality of data being captured.
Data was captured 24/7 via a cloud-based software system which managed the collection of the data points and set-up with an automatic alert system to immediately inform the project team should pre-set tolerances be breached. The fully automated report was received daily for the 8.00am site meeting, ensuring smooth project progress.
The team oversaw monitoring on the Cambridge site during the entire demolition and construction period of three years, and the automated system was both efficient and cost-effective.
