Government agree new OpenAI deal – How can we help?

Published on by James Wyllie

The UK Government has signed a new formal agreement with OpenAI. This partnership will bring AI capabilities into government departments to streamline processes locally and nationally. But it also signals something more physical. The new deal means new and expanded data centres, power and fibre infrastructure and environments with the capacity for large-scale AI workloads.

These are not future ideas, they are now national priorities. And they’ll move quickly.

The Buildout Begins

With the new deal in place, the government will look to accelerate investment in AI infrastructure, including the expansion of high-security data centres and computing facilities. These are now priorities tied to national policy and public service reform. Government departments such as education, defence, security, and the justice system will be given greater access to AI platforms such as Chat GPT. This requires:

  • Physical facilities that are resilient, secure and scalable
  • Upgraded utility, power and fibre infrastructure
  • Strategic land acquisition and accelerated planning

What This Means for the Built Environment

To deliver this new infrastructure, the whole supply chain in these projects will need to react quickly. Expect to see:

  • Tighter security requirements at every stage
  • Accelerated schedules driven by central government demand
  • Complex compliance and planning parameters
  • Greater scrutiny of topographical, boundary and underground conditions

When it comes down to it, AI relies on physical capacity. Think power, cooling stations, security, terabytes of storage and minimising downtime. This means more sites, tighter specs, and greater planning scrutiny.

How Survey Solutions Can Help

Survey Solutions is already delivering in this space. We support critical infrastructure and Government projects with our security-cleared surveyors who are trusted to operate independently on sensitive and restricted sites, enabling works to proceed with speed and confidence.

We bring:

  • Security-cleared personnel for restricted and government-grade sites
  • Experience in data centre and utility infrastructure
  • Digital deliverables compatible with BIM and planning tools
  • Fast turnaround and national capacity to meet accelerated schedules
  • A proven track record in enabling works, site control, and monitoring for high-value assets

Whether you’re acquiring land for a new facility, upgrading existing sites, or navigating planning challenges, we can deliver certainty from the ground up. AI needs infrastructure. Infrastructure needs surveys.
