Remote Monitoring at ExCel London

This is a prime example of how we deliver engineering certainty in complex groundworks—combining safety, speed and data-backed decision-making on high-profile schemes.
Remote Monitoring at ExCeL: A Smarter, Safer Way to Build
As part of the new ExCeL London expansion, 25,000 square metres of high-spec event space is being delivered, strengthening the city of London’s position as a global destination for business, culture and global events.
To support Gallagher Group during their early-stage works, we were appointed to deliver structural monitoring for the new foundations to be put in place. The challenge: mitigate any risk during excavation and concrete pour, without exposing personnel to any unnecessary safety hazards.
Their proposed method involved excavating in multiple phases, with steel bracing installed to stabilise the trench walls before each concrete pour. Precise movement data was essential from our team, but traditional manual monitoring and the option of sending any operatives into deep trenches was neither safe nor scalable.
Why remote monitoring was the right choice
We proposed a remote, sensor-driven approach to Gallagher Group.
Using a system of live sensors fixed to each of the steel bracings, we enabled 24/ 7 monitoring of any structural movement. The data fed into a secure online dashboard for everyone, giving the project team live visibility from anywhere, anytime. If a movement threshold was breached, an SMS alert triggered an immediate response, removing any potential delays and helping the team stay one step ahead of any risk.
This approach reduced the need for any repeat visits, eliminated exposure to any potential hazards and ensured a fully auditable record of structural integrity during the critical foundation phase of the project.
The full case study outlines how remote monitoring from Survey Solutions a supported safe and efficient delivery on this landmark scheme.
