Surveying Perth Royal Infirmary for NHS Redevelopment

In March 2020, just before the UK entered its first Covid-19 lockdown, we began delivering a comprehensive suite of surveys to the Perth Royal Infirmary in Tayside, Scotland. As NHS Tayside prepared to redevelop part of the existing hospital, the project required a range of detailed surveys to inform senior leaders in design and tendering.

Our scope for the project included measured building surveys to produce floor plans, sections, elevations and structural details across both interior and exterior spaces. Topographical surveys were also undertaken to provide a clear understanding of the site layout, while underground utilities surveys identified the location of services critical to future works.

Shortly after mobilising, the first covid national lockdown was announced, temporarily halting our progress. We later returned under strict health and safety protocols imposed by the government, which was particularly important given the active and sensitive hospital environment across the UK.

Surveying live hospital units, including A&E, operating theatres and the mortuary, called for a collaborative, low-impact approach from everyone. Our surveyors worked closely with hospital staff to protect patients, minimise any disruption and maintain safe working practices throughout the redevelopment.

Our original utilities survey identified a major water main right under the site. This discovery led to a follow-up phase including additional utilities and topographical surveys to validate the proposed re-routing of the pipe. At the same time, we were asked to complete further measured building surveys of internal areas not originally accessed in the original surveys in 2020.

To support the design team, we consolidated outputs from both survey phases into a single Revit model. This integration gave the architects a complete, high accuracy dataset, saving significant time on file imports and overlays.

Our Perth Royal Infirmary surveys demonstrate the value of early, accurate site data in complex, operational healthcare environments. Read the full case study for more detail on how we supported the redevelopment vision at this critical NHS site in Scotland.
