Fostering Future Engineering Talent
Survey Solutions Seminar and Workshop
As part of our ongoing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives, we were delighted to lead an afternoon workshop with a group of final-year Civil Engineering students from City University London at our recent Survey Solutions Seminar and Workshop.

Our team, including Director Greg Norman, Senior Trainer Sandrine Whitmore, John Gardner-Andrews, Regan Bailey from our London office, and Executive Team and Board member Jonathan Simpson Tarling, had the opportunity to engage with the next generation of engineers.
The seminar commenced with an overview of the engineering surveying sector, followed by an interactive, hands-on workshop. These sessions provided practical insights into our field, with live demonstrations of:
Global Positioning System (GPS)
Used to determine precise geographic coordinates across large areas.
Total Station
A surveying instrument that measures angles and distances with high accuracy within a direct line of sight.
3D Laser Scanner
Captures detailed 3D data of an environment by rapidly scanning with a laser beam, providing a comprehensive point cloud representation of complex structures or terrains.
Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
Uses electromagnetic pulses to create images of subsurface features by detecting reflections from changes in soil composition or buried objects, allowing users to “see” what lies beneath the ground without digging.
For many of the students, this was their first opportunity to handle such equipment. We were really impressed with their engagement and the quality of the questions they asked the team.
We regularly engage with higher education establishments across the country, near our network of local offices, to offer hands-on experiences that complement classroom learning. This activity really is a win-win for all of us. It helps foster a robust and innovative future for the industry, as well as giving our team an opportunity to engage with fresh minds and talent – some of whom may end up being our future colleagues.
Here’s to inspiring and engaging with the next generation of surveyors! 🌟
