Site engineering plays integral part in construction of student village

The delivery of a range of specialist on-site engineering support services by Survey Solutions has played an integral role in the construction of a new state-of-the-art student village at the University of Leicester.

The project includes more than 1000 rooms for student accommodation, a 500-space multi-storey car park, refurbishment of a Grade II listed building to be used as office and study space and a new Teaching & Learning Centre.

Working closely in conjunction with principal contractor ENGIE, a highly-experienced team from Survey Solutions provided essential expertise to supervise a range of sub-contractors engaged in piling, earthwork and foundations.

The £200 million project required on-site attendance by the Site Engineering team for several months, managing the building and survey data to ensure a smooth construction process and being on-hand to provide further detailed advice, measurement and checking when required.

More than 800 piles of different diameters were set out for the different elements of the village, including the car park, Teaching & Learning Centre and student accommodation blocks.

The Survey Solutions team also created collapse radiuses drawings for the tower cranes, piling rig and mobile platforms which were subsequently approved by Network Rail, allowing work to progress on site. In addition, the team supplied data to manage the earthworks and excavation operations as cost-effectively as possible and carried out pre-concrete checking.

Dave Mainwaring, Director for Site Engineering said: “We were very proud to work alongside ENGIE and its sub-contracting teams on the University of Leicester project, as an integral part of the delivery team. Being on-site ensured we were able to manage the design data and provide consistent, accurate and timely support for all aspects of the project.

“This is an excellent example of how Survey Solutions can play an integral role in construction projects by delivering a range of services including setting out, as-built surveys, monitoring for movement and volume calculations – and very importantly, providing solutions to problems on-site in real-time. This was made possible thanks to the expertise and dedication of our Site Engineers.”
