Underground Utilities Survey
AECOM

Navigating challenges and accelerating progress for AECOM’s road design

Whether it’s a major road design, infrastructure upgrade, or residential development, our surveyors frequently collaborate with local councils and traffic management partners to ensure accurate data collection while minimising disruption to public services. This project exemplifies the type of work our teams regularly handle across the country, combining detailed topographical and utilities surveys with tight tiSurveys melines and complex logistical challenges.

Brookleigh (formerly referred to as Northern Arc) is a multi-million pound residential master planned estate currently under development by Homes England in Burgess Hill, West Sussex. AECOM has been working with Homes England on the estate for over ten years and had been commissioned to produce a detailed design of the central section of Northern Arc avenue, the main spine road that connects the estate from east to west. We were delighted to win the competitive tender against four other surveying firms to complete topographical and utilities surveys of the 2km stretch of highway.

AECOM was designing two new junctions at interfaces between Northern Arc avenue and Cuckfield Road (B2036) and required a utilities survey to understand where local constraints existed and utilities lay so that they could produce the most effective design of the new road layout.

Additionally, as part of their condition of consent, Homes England had been asked to build a footpath alongside the 2km stretch of road.

AECOM required a topographical and utilities survey of the corridor proposed for the footpath along Cuckfield Road (B2036) to help identify potential ecological and topographical constraints that might hinder its design and to support ongoing discussions with the local council.

The roundabout south of the area being surveyed is one of the most congested and complained about junctions in the local council’s jurisdiction. Keeping traffic disruption to an absolute minimum whilst our surveyors were on site was therefore imperative. We worked very closely with AECOM to understand their requirements, with the West Sussex Council and with our traffic management partner, TGTM Ltd, to devise a traffic management solution that avoided road closures, whilst keeping our surveyors safe.

With a looming deadline and an imperative to complete the surveys as quickly as possible, we mobilised additional resources. Where we would normally survey an average 100m a day, this enabled us to survey 200m each day. Providing AECOM with data and drawings incrementally ensured they could advance their design work concurrently.

“Survey Solutions came recommended by a number of colleagues and were by far the most responsive and engaged throughout the tender process, coming back very quickly with well considered and tailored solutions. They really took the time to listen and understand what we needed, asking good questions and were the only company to come up with a solution that would mitigate our key risk, which was to minimise disruption to local traffic.”
