Precision 3D Scanning for dB Attenuation Ltd’s Acoustic Enclosures at National Grid Substations

Survey Solutions has enjoyed a long-standing partnership with dB Attenuation Ltd, a lead provider of acoustic enclosures in the energy sector. We have collaborated on several projects to support their design, construction and installation of acoustic enclosures around transformers and shunt reactors on National Grid sites across the UK, including Northern Ireland.

In one of our recent projects, we were tasked with conducting a 3D laser scan of a shunt reactor located at the 400kV National Grid substation in South Wales. The area, known as the bund, features naturally sloped screed levels that allow liquids to flow towards the sump. Measuring these sloped levels by hand would be both challenging and time-consuming.

To ensure precision, our surveyors utilised the Leica RTC360 3D Laser Scanner from multiple vantage points. This enabled us to generate an accurate 3D map of the Transformer, Cooler, Bund, and the site’s GPS coordinates.

We then converted the scans into a high Level of Detail (LOD5) Revit Model and Point Cloud, which dB Attenuation’s design team used to create an exact SolidWorks 3D model of the enclosure.
