Structural health monitoring equipment in place at a construction site in Cambridge

New city centre development supported by structural health solution

Working in partnership with principal contractor Gilbert Ash, Survey Solutions is providing one of its automated structural monitoring solutions as part of a new development in the centre of Cambridge

Due to open in 2025, the mixed-use project at the old St John’s Street car park site in the historic city will feature a new 229 room ‘aparthotel’ which will also include a gym, lounge and café facilities as well as a new underground car park.

As part of the construction process, the St John’s Street car park was closed in 2022 ready for demolition and the start of the development’s build programme. As part of this, a secant wall system will be installed followed by the excavation process.

Located close by, a Grade II listed building has been identified for ongoing structural monitoring to measure any potential structural impacts of the construction process. This is just one of many structural monitoring schemes that Survey Solutions works on across the UK with the team working on this Cambridge site during the entire demolition and construction period of three years.

As part of the monitoring specification and by working closely with the various project teams it was agreed that sixty patch scan locations, and fifty plus prisms would be installed on the neighboring properties, some of which are listed. Two MS60 Multistations were installed on site in cages to prevent damage and theft which would impact the level and quality of data being captured.

Data was captured 24:7 via a cloud-based software system which manages the collection of the data points and is automatically set up with an alert system where members of the project team can be informed immediately should pre-set tolerances be breached. A fully automated report is made available for a daily 8am site meeting to ensure the project is able to progress smoothly.
