Structural movement monitoring survey at a rail station building and platform

Rail station automated monitoring

Survey Solutions works on a number of structural monitoring schemes across the UK providing its clients with ongoing, accurate, reliable and timely data. Across residential, commercial and infrastructure programmes, our in-house monitoring team plays a pivotal role and is a vital partner within the wider project team

The nature of many monitoring projects means that data is vital to support decisions on the construction process, daily operations of the building or to inform quickly on any remedial action that may be required.

Survey Solutions was recently commissioned to provide its monitoring services on a rail station building and platform. Structural movement has been identified across the site and the data provided by Survey Solutions helped minimise any risk associated with the movement of critical infrastructure. As well as this, the results would support any decision on future action which may include the demolition and rebuilding of the platform.

The existing movement of the structure had already led to changes to operational changes at the station which included reducing the train size from 12 carriages down to six for any trains which stopped at the station.

The project will last around ten months and utilises a combination of leading technologies to provide customised reporting. This included plug and play solutions to assist the structural health monitoring, especially displacements in singular prisms to map station movements. Due to the risk of theft and vandalism some of the technology was mounted within a security cage and controlled remotely to monitor the position of 20 prism points installed at various locations across the site.

Due to lack of access to the station site within operational hours, remote monitoring was also required as part of the project brief. Survey Solutions was the first company in the UK to install the ComBox60 from Leica. This was mounted on site before connecting to the total station within the security cage. The solution allowed for remotely operating the MS60 Multistation, tilt Sensors and vibration monitors without the requirement for site visits which in turn increased resource efficiencies and delivered 24/7 data stored in a database with no gaps in the information.

Multiple data sets were captured at different times of the day to assess any deformation caused by the changing environmental and structural condition.

“This was the first project of this type we have been involved in and we are delighted with the quality of data we have been able to provide our client. By being able to control the project remotely we were able to deliver efficiency savings in time of time, cost and reducing the environmental impact of our involvement in the project.”
