Accurate cable monitoring protects electricity supply to thousands of homes
Construction of a multi-million pound development of more than 70 high-value residential apartments and commercial units is underway in Battersea, London, on a site with an underground 66kV cable running close to the building work and in between two sets of piling rigs.
Any damage to the cable during the building work, caused by movement or vibration, would have far-reaching implications, affecting the electricity supply to many thousands of homes and buildings in the area. As a result, Survey Solutions has been engaged to carry out a monitoring project to provide accurate, regular and detailed data to all parties involved in the construction project. Dave Mainwaring, Director at Survey Solutions said: “The potential risk of this cable being struck or damaged is huge and so it is extremely important that our specialist team records and delivers detailed, reliable and timely data.
“We are undertaking continuous vibration monitoring, along with weekly movement monitoring, to understand if the work being carried out on site, including piling, is causing any issues to the underground cable. By precisely measuring the position of our pre-installed monitoring prisms, we can analyse each measurement against the original base reading of every individual monitoring target. This data is then fed back for review by the various parties in the project.” Avi Filosov, Project Manager for the development added: “It is essential that we have accurate and regular monitoring of the cable, during the construction phase, so that we protect the electricity supply to many thousands of people in this part of London. Survey Solutions’ monitoring is providing all those working on the project with this essential data to avoid widespread disruption.”
